What is it:
Pelvic pain is pain in the lowest part of the stomach area and can occur on the region on women’s ( and people assigned female at birth’s or AFAB) reproductive organs. It can arise from infection, whether in your pelvic bone or other non-reproductive internal organs such as the digestive tract or urinary organs. Predominantly in females, it is caused by a problem occurring in the pelvic area reproductive organs. Some known causes can be due to:
Appendicitis
Bladder issues (ex. UTI)
STIs
Kidney issues
Intestinal issues (ex. Kidney stones)
Hernias
Broken pelvic bones or tight pelvic muscles
Pregnancy (ex. Any including ectopic or miscarriages)
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Menstrual issues
Ovarian cysts /uterine fibroids
Endometriosis/adenomyosis
Cervical/uterine cancer
Symptoms:
Depending on its source, the pain can be dull or sharp, constant or off and on, and vary in severity. The pain can travel to the lower back, buttocks or thighs. Females can experience a variety of symptoms that may include:
Vaginal bleeding with spotting or discharge along with menstrual pain
Pain while urinating (dysuria) or blood in their bowel movements
Constipation or diarrhea
Bloating/gas
Fevers or chills
Hip/groin pain
Who can get it:
It can happen to all sexes and can be caused by many things, due to no known underlying cause. Based on the location of the pain, along with type and severity, the doctor will determine the best course of action for treatment based on thorough examination, varying from lifestyle changes, holistic or medical approaches or in some cases minimally invasive surgical procedures (some which can be performed in office or in a hospital setting).
