What is it:
Uterine fibroids are smooth, muscular growths in the wall of the uterus. They develop from normal uterus muscle cells that can grow abnormally into benign or non cancerous masses or tumors.
Symptoms:
Most fibroids do not cause any symptoms, but some women with rather enlarged fibroids may feel heaviness or pressure in their lower abdomen or pelvis. Often this is described as a vague discomfort rather than a sharp pain. Sometimes, the enlarged uterus makes it difficult to lie face down, bend over or exercise without discomfort. It can also cause heavy bleeding (heavy enough to cause anemia) or painful periods.
Who can have it:
Fibroids are a common occurrence – up to 50% of women have fibroids by age 50. They often appear during the years you're usually able to get pregnant and give birth. It is not yet known what causes fibroids, but studies suggest genetics and prolonged exposure to estrogen may increase your risk of developing fibroids. Unfortunately one size does not fit all when managing fibroids. While some patients are most concerned about the heavy bleeding, others are struggling with fertility issues and want their treatments to preserve their uterus, while others are past their childbearing years but don’t want their uterus surgically removed for personal, cultural or religious reasons.
At Crescent Care Women's Health, we pride ourselves on listening to your concerns and tailoring the treatment plan accordingly.
