What is it:
Adenomyosis occurs when tissue that normally lines the uterus, grows into the muscular walls of the uterus and causes your uterus to enlarge. Specifically, the endometrial lining of the uterus is found within the myometrial (or middle) layer of the uterine walls, grows into the surrounding myometrium.
Symptoms:
Although not harmful, this may cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, severe cramping, pain during intercourse, blood clots that pass during a period, or feelings of abdominal bloating - all of which can disrupt your lifestyle.
Who can have it:
Adenomyosis occurs most often late in the childbearing years and typically disappears after menopause. Research has not found an answer as to how some people develop adenomyosis or what causes it. However, some research suggests hormones, genetics or inflammation/trauma may contribute to adenomyosis.
